Time to explore
Please note: Smallmouth Sands and Osmington are my favoured locations
1. Charmouth
Still the most consistent location on the coast. Regular landslides feed the beach with ammonites, belemnites, crinoid stems, and sometimes marine reptile bone. Work the shingle on a falling tide. If it's been stormy, it's worth going early.
2. Monmouth Beach
Famous for the Ammonite Pavement, but there’s plenty more in the loose material west of town. Keep to the foreshore - hammering the rock ledges is off-limits. Ammonite cross-sections and pyritised fragments can turn up if you know what to watch for.
3. Seatown
A bit quieter, but well worth the walk. The cliffs between Seatown and Golden Cap can drop big blocks full of fossil material. Ammonites, plant matter, and the occasional fish-scale nodule have been found here. Work safe - these cliffs are fast-moving and dangerous.
4. Ringstead Bay
You don’t always find something here - but when you do, it’s often special. Fossil coral, gastropods, and the occasional echinoid in flint nodules. The further east you walk, the more natural the setting gets. Good for peaceful hunts with less foot traffic.
5. Eype
Just west of West Bay, Eype is one of those spots that rewards patience. Plant fossils in the shales, and marine material in the exposed rocks below the cliffs. Watch your footing - some layers are slick, especially when wet.
6. Bran Point
A hidden gem between Bowleaze and Ringstead. The route in is rough, but the foreshore often reveals broken nodules filled with ammonites and belemnites. Careful footing required - there’s no easy exit in bad weather.
7. West Bexington
Mainly flint nodules and fossil sea urchins, but occasionally marine reptile fragments wash up here after a good storm. Worth visiting after high-energy tides, especially if Chesil Bank has taken a battering.
8. White Nothe
Steep to get to, but the views and solitude make it worthwhile. Chalk cliffs with flint bands - expect echinoids, sponges, and occasional fossil shells. Remote and wild - go prepared, and go early.
