Osmington Mills (Backhead) Weymouth
Book hereAt times, bone material can be discovered in this location. Stunning large echnoids and gastropods are also found. The critical factor is understanding when and where to look.

Have a lookHere are a few more of the locations we search along the Jurassic Coast. Each one offers something different - some are quiet, others dramatic - but all have the potential to reveal something ancient. When the layers open up, we’re there to read them.

Fossil Hunting Walks in Dorset - Smallmouth Sands & Osmington
Availability:
Join me for a private, guided fossil hunting tour in Dorset, exploring one of two of the Jurassic Coast’s most fascinating but less-visited locations - Smallmouth Sands and Osmington. This stunning stretch of England’s only natural World Heritage Site is world-famous for its fossils, but these quieter spots offer a more personal and rewarding experience away from the busier tourist areas.
Smallmouth Sands - Rare Jurassic Fossils
Smallmouth Sands is a hidden gem for fossil hunters, revealing material from the Kimmeridge Clay Formation, including fossilised marine reptiles, fish, and rare pterosaur fossils. Unlike popular fossil spots such as Charmouth, Smallmouth Sands is peaceful and ideal for those who want a focused, hands-on search with expert guidance.
Osmington - Ammonites, Shells & Ancient Sea Life
The cliffs and coastal exposures around Osmington provide a window into Upper Jurassic marine environments. You’ll discover ammonites, fossilised shells, and other fragments of ancient sea life, with opportunities to learn about the geology that shaped this part of the Jurassic Coast.
Archaeology Meets Palaeontology
These guided walks also explore the area’s rich archaeological history, with the chance to see worked flint, early tools, and evidence of Mesolithic and Neolithic human activity - a rare blend of fossil hunting and archaeology in one trip.
